Pavement Ants

Pavement Ants Pavement Ants are the most common Ant in the Northeast. Its preference for nesting is in and under cracks in the pavement, They usually nest outdoors, but have been known to enter the home by foraging Worker Ants. Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh Ants Pharaoh ants, that are usually native to Africa, have found their way to various regions of the United States and Canada. They can be found in homes, apartment buildings, health care facilities, and food handling establishments. Worker ants are very small and yellow to reddish in color. They have a winged reproductive caste. They rarely swarm and mating occurs within the colony and move to other locations often as a result of insecticide treatment or other adverse conditions., they nest in wall voids, behind baseboard heating, and in unusual places like electrical outlets and small appliances. Pharaoh ants are highly attracted to any water source within the home. Pharaoh ants are extremely sensitive to traditional insecticide treatments and will respond by splitting colonies and invading other sites. Winged Carpenter Ants

Winged Carpenter Ants Usually coming out at the end of spring, the Winged Carpenter Ant emerges from the colony. Their mission is to establish a new colony. Often mistaken for the Winged Termite, the carpenter ant is bigger. However, the Winged it has three distinct body segments, and has wings that are a translucent brown and extend only slightly past the body. the wings of the Winged Termite are longer than the body and break off shortly after they emerge. if you see a small pile of wings on the floor that¹s a sure sign of Winged Termites, not Winged Carpenter Ants. These galleries can be so smooth, the wood looks like it has been sandpapered. Though they don’t eat the wood like termites, they can still cause considerable damage if left untreated. Carpenter Ants vary in size. They leave sawdust piles and nest in moist areas. Worker Carpenter Ants on a regular basis, make crunching noise behind a walls and ceilings. nesting spots include attached decks, leaky roofs, under insulation in cellars and attics or where additions attach to the home. Carpenter Bees

Carpenter Bees have grown in large numbers and is most common in the northeast. They look like bumble bees, but are smaller. Carpenter Bees bore round holes into the dry wood of homes, decks, and fence posts. These holes are typically 4-to-6 inches deep and are most often seen along the eaves of homes. The female Carpenter Bee lines the hole with a mixture of pollen and nectar, lay an egg and seal up the hole. An infestation can be a recurring and persistent problem since the males and females will winter in existing holes and may even use these same holes for egg laying the following season, while excavating new holes in the same general area. Cicada Killer

Cicada killers are very large ground-nesting wasps with coloration and markings similar to yellow jackets. these wasps are very different from yellow jackets, which are social and form large underground colonies. Cicada killers are solitary wasps .The female cicada killer will excavate large burrows in foundation plantings, lawns, or along walkways. Each burrow she constructs is provisioned with paralyzed insects and spiders, which serve as food for a single developing wasp. Though not terribly aggressive, females will sting if handled and may harass children playing near their nest. Other related wasps of concern to homeowners known as mud daubers. These wasps are generally smaller than the digger wasps, metallic blue/black in color, and construct mud nests in attics, garages, or on the sides of buildings. European Hornet

The European or giant hornet is the largest species of social wasp found in North America. Worker hornets are brown and yellow in color with most exceeding one inch in length! They construct large paper colonies in tree cavities but will nest in buildings too. They are not known for being terribly aggressive but will defend their nest if disturbed. They will forage at night and are highly attracted to outdoor lighting plus they’ll harvest living plant tissue to construct their nests. They will feed upon the nectar of flowers but will also take sap from plants by chewing twigs. LET ASAP PEST CONTROL “HOME OF THE X-TERMINATOR” KNOCK THEM OUT. CALL 800-BUGS-375

Honey Bee

Honeybees are important insects found throughout the world and have been cultured for thousands of years to produce honey and beeswax. Many different strains have been identified and crossbred to create more productive hybrid bees. honey bees play an incredibly important role in the production of nearly all types of food crops simply by gathering up their favorite foods—pollen and nectar. Honey bees create colonies that often contain tens of thousands of workers. These bees are yellow-orange in color, ½ to 5/8 inch long, mostly covered with hairs. Queen and male bees are similar but slightly larger. Honey bees will swarm whenever existing quarters become unsuitable due to crowding or when their queen is on the decline. Swarms that gather around a new queen need not cause concern because they are very docile, and should never be killed. Beekeepers specialize in the live removal of colonies from difficult situations like walls or attics. LET ASAP PEST CONTROL “HOME OF THE X-TERMINATOR” KNOCK THEM OUT. CALL 800-BUGS-375

Paper Wasp

All the social wasps produce a papery material to construct their nests. Paper wasps are really distinguished from their cousins by the type of nest they make which is open-celled (some say umbrella shaped)as opposed to being completely wrapped in paper. they fly relatively slow with their legs held below the body. Paper wasps are "tame" by comparison to their relatives but will deliver very painful stings if threatened. Two troublesome species are the northern paper wasp (which is dark brown and approx.5/8 inch long)and the slightly smaller European paper wasp. The European paper wasp is an aggressive newcomer, which was first recorded right in Massachusetts in the early 1980's. Both species nest in attics, beneath decks, shingles, and building overhangs but the European type is adept at nesting in all types of outdoor items from gas grills to play sets. Each year, people suffer serious medical complications and even death from hypersensitivity to wasp stings. LET ASAP PEST CONTROL “HOME OF THE X-TERMINATOR” KNOCK THEM OUT. CALL 800-BUGS-375

Yellow Jacket

Yellowjackets are yet another stinging member of the wasp family that causes PROBLEMS for homeowners. THE New England AREA is home to many species, all of which are about 3to5/8 inch long, black and yellow in color. They’re quite different from their very distant relatives the honeybees. Both build combs for raising their brood but yellowjackets make them out of paper instead of wax. Yellowjackets do not make honey like bees preferring instead to hunt or scavenge for their food. Yellowjackets will nest mostly in old rodent burrows and are usually discovered the hard way by children playing too close or by accidentally mowing over their nest. Here they’ll build layers of comb completely enveloping them with paper and expanding the size as needed throughout the summer. Sometimes, yellowjackets will invade wall voids or nest between attic rafters in your home. LET ASAP PEST CONTROL “HOME OF THE X-TERMINATOR” KNOCK THEM OUT. CALL 800-BUGS-375

American Cockroach

American Cockroach This species of cockroach was introduced to this country by way of Africa when trade ships unloaded their wares. They grow from 1 to 2 inches long and are quick moving. German Cockroach

German cockroaches are yet another tropical species now found worldwide. They are the most common and important species from a public health standpoint. characteristics include long antenna that droop back and two dark bars on the top of the head. German cockroaches are carriers of germs responsible for food poisoning, dysentery, and other illnesses. Cockroach allergens are responsible for high rates of asthma among children in inner city housing. German cockroaches have extremely high reproductive rates with females producing 5 generations per year on average and up to 200 offspring! They live in warm areas with high humidity and therefore are found mostly in kitchens and bathrooms. Newer treatment methods rely mostly on baits. A properly performed application using baits will usually provide total elimination with only one treatment (depends on level of infestation). Oriental Cockroach

Despite its name, the oriental cockroach is found worldwide. The adult males are about 1-inch long and are quite dark in color (dark reddishbrown to black). Because of their dark color they are sometimes referred to as the “black beetle”. The male’s wings do not completely cover the back as you can see in the image, while the female has very small nonfunctional wings. Unlike other cockroaches, oriental cockroaches cannot climb up smooth surfaces. Oriental cockroaches are cold tolerant survive outdoors living under stones and yard debris. Indoors they live in damp basements, crawlspaces, floor drains, and trash rooms. Oriental cockroaches will feed upon a wide variety of food sources. Termites

TermitesTermites do more damage every year in the US than storms and tornadoes combined. According to the US Department of Agriculture, termites cause billions of dollars in damage to homes, schools and businesses every year. Worker termites are small white-to-tan insects that feed on wood or similar material. As their name suggests, Subterranean termites construct nests in the soil. Although several species occur in our area, the main termite in the northeastern U.S. is the Eastern Subterranean Termite. They are small white-to-tan insects that feed on wood or similar material. As their name suggests, Subterranean termites construct nests in the soil. A colony of Subterranean termites will build shelter tubes made of mud and saliva that form tunnels to their food sources. Winged Adult Termites

Winged termites are usually the first sign of an active colony that a home or business owner will notice. Termites are social insects with distinct individuals performing specific tasks within the colony. Worker termites gather all the provision for the colony and cause damage to structures. Soldier and reproductive termites (responsible for colony defense and expansion respectively) are so specialized that they cannot even feed themselves and must be attended to by the workers. Each spring swarming termites cause panic among homeowners. The first question to ask is are these termites or flying ants. Termite swarmers have several characteristics that distinguish them from ants. They are 3/8-in. (body and wings) long, dark colored with straight antennae and two pair of equal length wings Ant swarmers size vary by species, have three distinct body regions, (termites appear to only have two) elbowed antennae and two pair of unequal wings. Black Widows

Black Widows Black widows are truly dangerous spiders that are alive and well in North America. They produce a powerful neurotoxin venom that can cause muscular pain, nausea, fever, and in some cases, death. According to scientific literature, there are three different species of black widows that are distinguishable by size and color. Black widows arrive to the east coast by way of grape imports from the west coast. Adult female widows are about 1/2inch long, dark black in color with a velvety shine and red hourglass markings on its undersides. Adult male widows are much smaller, more variable in color and immature spiders may be yellow or white gradually darkening with each molt. They build webs in outdoor locations such as sheds, woodpiles, or under stones. Indoors, they can be found in normally quiet areas of the home such as basements and crawl spaces. Female widows do not always kill the male after mating unless they are hungry. LET ASAP PEST CONTROL “HOME OF THE X-TERMINATOR” KNOCK THEM OUT. CALL 800- BUGS-375

House Spiders

House Spiders The common house spiders are seen all over the world but are virtually harmless to people. Adult female spiders are about 1/3 inch and yellowishbrown to grey in color with indistinct stripes. Males are similar in color, slightly smaller, and will often live with the female in the same web. These spiders build cobwebs in damp areas such as basements, garages, crawlspaces, but can also be found around doorframes, windows and eaves.
